Bank of Canada Holds Rate at 2.25% for Sixth Straight Decision

The Bank of Canada left its benchmark rate at 2.25% for a sixth consecutive decision, citing oil-price pressure, US trade uncertainty, and early signs of a Q2 growth rebound.

Rate Held Steady

The Bank of Canada left its policy interest rate unchanged at 2.25% on July 15, 2026, marking the sixth straight decision without a move. Alongside the policy rate, the Bank Rate stands at 2.5% and the deposit rate at 2.20%.

The Governing Council said the current rate remains appropriate to sustain the recovery and bring inflation back to the 2% target. It pointed to higher oil prices linked to conflict in the Middle East, ongoing uncertainty around US trade policy, and signs that the Canadian economy is resuming growth in the second quarter.

What's Next

The Bank's next scheduled rate decision is set for September 2, 2026.
