Torex Gold Resources

A single-district Mexican gold producer that has just finished building its Media Luna mine and is pivoting from heavy construction spending to strong free-cash-flow generation.

The business

Torex operates the Morelos Complex in Guerrero State, Mexico, comprising the maturing El Limon Guajes (ELG) open-pit/underground mine and the newly commissioned Media Luna underground gold-copper-silver mine, linked by a shared processing plant.

Media Luna reached commercial production in 2025, extending mine life and adding copper by-product credits; the company is now shifting from a multi-year capital build into a cash-harvest phase.

It is effectively a single-asset, single-country producer, which concentrates both the operating leverage and the geopolitical risk.

The moat

Torex has no royalty or brand moat; its edge is a large, contiguous, high-grade land package in a proven district with existing permitted infrastructure and a paid-for processing plant.

Low-cost underground grades and copper credits give it a competitive all-in cost position, but as a price-taker in gold it has no pricing power — the moat is asset quality and district scale, not economics durability.

Financial snapshot

Most recent reported period : FY2025 (ended Dec 31, 2025); trailing-twelve-months to Q1 FY2026 (Mar 31, 2026). Figures reflect the review date — confirm current numbers before acting.

Revenue (FY2025)US$1.31B
Net income (FY2025)US$403M
Diluted EPS (FY2025)US$4.53
Operating cash flow (FY2025)US$489M
Free cash flow (FY2025)US$135M (depressed by Media Luna capex)
Free cash flow (TTM to Mar 2026)~US$430M as capex rolls off
Market cap~C$5.0B (P/E ~6.2)

Free cash flow yield & sustainable growth

Free cash flow yield : ≈12%Trailing free cash flow of ~C$600M against a market cap of ~C$5.0B (P/FCF ~8.3). Note FY2025 FCF of only US$135M was suppressed by Media Luna construction; the yield reflects the post-capex trailing recovery.

FY2025 free cash flow was suppressed to ~US$135M by the tail of Media Luna construction; trailing FCF has already climbed toward ~US$430M as capital spending falls.

Sustainable growth from here is modest — this is a harvest story, not an expansion story — driven by higher gold prices and full Media Luna throughput rather than new mines, so reinvestment needs are low and cash returns can rise.

Valuation & what to watch

At roughly C$5.0B market cap the stock trades near 6x earnings and ~8x trailing free cash flow — cheap on the surface, reflecting single-asset and Mexican jurisdiction discounts.

The low multiple only makes sense if the post-construction free-cash-flow ramp is real and sustained; on FY2025's construction-depressed FCF it looks far more expensive, so the thesis rests on the 2026 cash-flow normalization.

Dividend

Torex pays a small dividend (yield ~1.1%) initiated as it exited the build phase, with capital-return capacity expected to grow now that construction capex has rolled off; the payout is well covered but remains a secondary use of cash behind the balance sheet.

Risks & the bear case

  • Single-asset, single-country concentration: any operational, permitting, or security disruption at the Morelos Complex hits ~100% of revenue.
  • Mexican mining-policy and community/security risk in Guerrero State.
  • Media Luna ramp-up execution — grade, throughput and cost must hit plan to justify the FCF ramp.
  • Gold and copper price exposure with no hedged pricing power; earnings swing directly with metal prices.

Recent developments

Media Luna moved into full commercial production during 2025, the pivotal event that ends the multi-year capital program.

Trailing-twelve-months free cash flow to Q1 2026 has recovered sharply toward ~US$430M as construction spending unwinds, and the shares are up roughly 44% over the past year on firm gold prices.

Verdict

Torex is a classic post-construction re-rating candidate: a low-multiple, high-grade Mexican producer that has finished its big capital build and should convert Media Luna into meaningful free cash flow. The upside is genuine if the ramp holds, but the risk profile is unusually binary — one complex, one country. Investors are being paid a cheap multiple precisely because there is no diversification cushion. This is a publisher's analysis, not investment advice.
