Pan American Silver

One of the largest primary silver producers, with a diversified gold-and-silver mine portfolio across the Americas and meaningful upside from the restart optionality of its Escobal silver mine.

L'entreprise

Pan American operates a portfolio of silver and gold mines across Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Canada and Brazil, giving it geographic and metal diversification uncommon among silver producers.

Roughly half its revenue comes from gold, which funds operations while preserving leverage to silver prices.

It holds the large, currently-suspended Escobal mine in Guatemala — a significant embedded call option if community consultation allows a restart.

Les avantages concurrentiels

No pricing power as a metals producer, but scale, a long operating history, and a diversified, multi-jurisdiction asset base lower single-mine risk and give it access to capital and deal flow.

Its moat is scale and portfolio breadth (including one of the world's largest silver resource bases and the Escobal optionality) rather than cost leadership — resilience through diversification, not durable economics.

Rendement du flux de trésorerie disponible et croissance durable

Rendement du flux de trésorerie disponible : ≈7.2%Trailing free cash flow of ~US$1.31B against a market cap of ~C$25.4B implies a free-cash-flow yield of roughly 7.2% (P/FCF ~14).

Free cash flow climbed to ~US$1.31B trailing from US$1.02B in FY2025 as gold and silver prices rose and portfolio optimization (asset sales, cost focus) took hold.

Sustainable growth is driven by metal prices, incremental mine improvements, and the potential Escobal restart — the largest single catalyst — rather than large new builds, keeping the reinvestment burden manageable and supporting rising shareholder returns.

Valorisation et points à surveiller

At ~C$25.4B the shares trade around 13.6x trailing earnings (~10x forward) and ~14x free cash flow — a middle-of-the-road multiple for a large diversified precious-metals miner in a strong price environment.

The valuation embeds some Escobal restart optionality; strip that out and it is fairly, not cheaply, priced. It rewards silver-price bulls who want diversified exposure rather than deep-value hunters.

Dividende

Pan American pays a variable dividend (yield ~1.7%) partly linked to net cash and silver prices, so the payout scales with cash generation; it is comfortably covered by free cash flow but is designed to flex down in weaker price environments.

Risques et scénario baissier

  • Silver-price volatility, amplified by the primary-silver leverage.
  • Multi-jurisdiction political and permitting risk (Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico).
  • Escobal remains suspended pending consultation — a binary catalyst that could disappoint.
  • Cost inflation and grade/reserve depletion across a large, mature mine portfolio.

Faits récents

Trailing free cash flow reached ~US$1.31B through Q1 2026 on strong precious-metals pricing, with share count up ~9% year-on-year reflecting prior acquisition activity.

Management continued portfolio optimization and debt reduction, supporting the variable dividend.

Verdict

Pan American is the diversified, liquid way to own silver leverage with a gold cushion — a large, multi-mine producer generating over a billion dollars of free cash flow and carrying real Escobal optionality. It is fairly priced rather than cheap, and its jurisdictional spread cuts both ways: lower single-asset risk but broad exposure to Latin-American policy shifts. For silver bulls it is a core holding; for value investors it is a hold-your-nose-on-price name. Publisher's analysis, not investment advice.
