Finning International

The world's largest Caterpillar dealer, monetizing mining, construction and power demand across Western Canada, South America and the UK/Ireland through equipment sales and a sticky product-support annuity.

L'entreprise

Finning is the largest Caterpillar equipment dealer globally, selling, renting and servicing Cat machines and engines across three regions: Canada (Western Canada), South America (Chile, Argentina, Bolivia) and the UK & Ireland.

The economics hinge on the aftermarket: new-equipment sales seed a growing installed base, and high-margin parts, service and rebuilds ('product support') generate recurring, less-cyclical revenue over each machine's life.

Les avantages concurrentiels

An exclusive, protected Caterpillar dealership territory is effectively an irreplaceable franchise — customers buying Cat iron must transact through Finning.

A vast installed base plus branch, parts and technician networks create a recurring product-support annuity and high switching costs in mission-critical mining/energy applications.

Decades of regional relationships and service depth are near-impossible for a new entrant to replicate.

Rendement du flux de trésorerie disponible et croissance durable

Rendement du flux de trésorerie disponible : ≈4% (est.)Normalized FY2025 free cash flow of ~C$480M divided by ~C$12.1B market cap ≈ 4.0%. TTM FCF was distorted to ~C$41M by a large inventory/working-capital build, so the FY figure is used as a truer through-cycle estimate.

Free cash flow swings with inventory and rental-fleet investment; through-cycle it is healthy but should be read on a multi-year, not single-quarter, basis.

Sustainable growth comes from expanding the installed base and product-support revenue, mining-fleet replacement in Chile, and improving margins/returns on invested capital.

Valorisation et points à surveiller

At ~24x trailing earnings the stock has re-rated sharply after strong operational execution and record backlog, sitting above its historical mid-cycle multiple.

Reported FCF is lumpy: a large working-capital (inventory) build cut TTM FCF to roughly C$41M, so a normalized FY2025 FCF of ~C$480M (≈4% yield) is the fairer lens for a distributor.

Dividende

Pays C$1.30 per share annually (yield ~1.40%), recently raised ~9%. A modest but reliably growing dividend from a company that also buys back stock; the payout leaves ample room for reinvestment.

Risques et scénario baissier

  • Heavy exposure to mining and commodity cycles (especially Chilean copper and Canadian oil sands) makes new-equipment demand volatile.
  • Single-supplier dependence on Caterpillar and concentration in a few economies; South American political, currency and inflation risk is material.
  • Working-capital swings can sharply depress free cash flow in any given period even when earnings are strong.

Faits récents

Q1 FY2026 paired flattish revenue with ~16% net-income and ~19% EPS growth, reflecting a richer product-support mix and margin gains.

The stock is up ~50% over the past year on a strong backlog and improving returns; the dividend was increased ~9%.

Verdict

Finning owns one of the best franchises in industrial distribution — a protected Cat dealership backed by a growing aftermarket annuity — and recent results show margins and returns improving even without volume growth. But it remains fundamentally cyclical and commodity-linked, its cash flow is working-capital-lumpy, and the shares have already re-rated to a full multiple. Best understood as a quality cyclical near the higher end of its valuation range, not a defensive compounder. CoinCompass is a publisher, not an investment adviser.
