Capstone Copper

An Americas-focused pure-play copper producer whose Mantoverde sulfide ramp-up is finally converting years of growth capex into rising free cash flow.

L'entreprise

Capstone is a mid-tier, copper-focused miner with a portfolio of long-life assets in the Americas: Pinto Valley (Arizona), Cozamin (Mexico), and Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde in Chile.

The Mantoverde sulfide project (MV-DP) has been the key growth driver, lifting copper output and pushing trailing revenue toward ~US$2.7B.

Beyond the current base, Capstone holds a large organic growth pipeline including Mantoverde Optimized and the undeveloped Santo Domingo project in Chile.

Les avantages concurrentiels

Scale and long reserve lives in relatively investable copper jurisdictions give durable exposure to a structurally tight copper market.

Falling unit costs as Mantoverde ramps improve the cost-curve position and cash-flow resilience through the price cycle.

Embedded, permitted growth optionality (Santo Domingo, MVO) that would be expensive and slow for peers to replicate.

Rendement du flux de trésorerie disponible et croissance durable

Rendement du flux de trésorerie disponible : ≈2.7% (est.)TTM FCF of US$200.5M against a ~C$10.2B market cap (~US$7.4B at ~1.37 USD/CAD) ≈ 2.7%.

Free cash flow turned solidly positive (US$166M FY2025, ~US$200M TTM) as the heavy Mantoverde build phase rolled off and production climbed.

Sustainable growth from here depends on Mantoverde running at nameplate plus optimization tonnes; the larger, discretionary Santo Domingo project would require a fresh capital cycle.

Valorisation et points à surveiller

Trades around 15x trailing / ~12x forward earnings — a copper-cycle multiple that reflects both the completed Mantoverde ramp and expectations for further growth.

FCF yield is modest (~2.7%) because the balance is still weighted toward growth; the bull case is that free cash flow expands materially as capex normalizes and Mantoverde runs at full rate.

Dividende

No dividend — capital is retained for growth projects and debt reduction.

Risques et scénario baissier

  • Single-commodity exposure: earnings and cash flow swing directly with the copper price.
  • Concentration in Chile brings water, permitting and jurisdictional risk; ramp/optimization execution is not guaranteed.
  • Leverage taken on during the growth build must be worked down; a copper downturn during heavy capex would pressure the balance sheet.

Faits récents

Trailing revenue rose ~13% year over year as Mantoverde sulfide output ramped; the stock re-rated sharply (market cap up ~77%).

Reported TTM net income (~US$944M) is flattered by non-operating/one-time items well above FY2025's US$316M, so free cash flow is the cleaner read on the business.

Verdict

Capstone is a growth-through-execution copper story that has crossed an important line: after years of building, it is generating real free cash flow. Through the FCF-yield lens it is still only modestly cheap (~2.7%), so the thesis is about the trajectory — full-rate Mantoverde plus optimization should widen FCF, while Santo Domingo is optionality that also implies future spending. It fits investors who want leveraged copper exposure and believe in the ramp; the absence of a dividend and copper-price sensitivity are the trade-offs. Publisher, not adviser.
